Calendar 2007-2008 Programs

Meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at the Amherst Congregational Church, Amherst, NH. The meetings begin at 9 AM with a social time to be followed by a business meeting and then the monthly program. Program generally starts at 10:30. Guests are welcome to attend.

REMINDER- WHEN AMHERST SCHOOLS ARE CANCELED DUE TO BAD WEATHER THE GARDEN CLUB MONTHLY MEETING WILL BE CANCELED. If school is delayed due to weather, we will meet as scheduled. If cancelled we will try to reschedule the meeting the following week.

"Bulbs and Companion Plants"

Laura D. Eisener is a landscape designer from Saugus, MA and teaches in the landscape design program at the Arnold Arboretum. She will speak on blulbs and companion plants. We'll look at some popular and more unusual bulbs, design ideas, and care tips. Well chosen companion plants help your garden weather the season of fading bulb foliage and fill in the gaps duing the bulbs' dormant period.

"Feng Shui in the Garden"

In a joint venture with the Northeast Cultural Coop we will be celebrating the unique and diverse culture of China. We will be looking both at the Chinese style of gardening and their use of Feng Shui. Mr Yih-Ping R. Chang is an architect, Feng Shui consultant, educator and professional artist. We thank the Northeast Cultural Connection in Malden, MA for their help with this venture. As with all our meetings they are open to the public.

November 1

"Growing Wisdom"

David Epstein, meteorologist with Channel 5 in Boston since 1992 and host for over three years of Extreme Garden Makeover on WCVB in Boston will give a talk and share his horticultural knowledge on topics such as indoor gardening, winter interest and thinking towards spring as well as sharing some TV talk along the way. Dvid is currently a professor as FRamingham State College; he has a landscape design business, Bloomscapes, Inc; wirtes for several newspapers; and has a garden video site www.Growing Wisdom.com.

Boxwood Tree Workshop

Members Only!

This year the Holiday workshop will be planned by the Perennial Study Group. Everyone will work on a Boxwood Tree or Ball under the direction of club members Mary Salmon and Lois Boericke. Check your Nov. newsletter for more information. There will be a few to Make an item so as to cover the cost of materials.

January 3

"Attracting Birds to Your Backyard"

Amherst's very own Wayne Seibert from the Bird House on Rte 101, will give a talk on ways to attract birds into our backyards. Wayne will share his knowledge on the type of plants, feeders and house's we can use to entice our feathered friends to visit, reside and entertain us all year long in our gardens. Enjoy Wayne's useful bird friendly advise and information along with a question and answer period. We will also be having a raffle and the lucky winners will not be disappointed.

February 7

"Caring for Houseplants"

Chalifours of Manchester will give a talk on Caring for your House Plants. Including the types of house plants, water and light requirements, fertilizing needs, dealing with common pests and problems, re-potting, taking cuttings and answering questions such as which plants can be put outside in the summer months.We will have a table set and members are encouraged to bring in and display some of their favorite houseplants. There will be a raffle.

"Suddenly Spring"

 

Back by popular demand, Bill Graham of Beautiful Things in Salem, MA. Bill will be sure to entertain and delight us with his unique flair, enthusiasm and decorating ideas. "Suddenly Spring" will show us how to use color, spring flowers and innovative designs for our spring arrangements.

April 3

"Garden Stewardship: Preserving a Legacy"

Tovar Martin, horticulturist, author, freelance writer, photo stylist and lecturer will give a slide show and lecture on Garden Stewardship: Preserving a Legacy. The beauty of gardens is that they mature. This is a lecture about garden stewards and how gardeners grapple with change. Tovah will address the challenges of bringing landscapes into the next generation. Whether you have inherited a landscape or created a garden over decades and now face mature trees and shrubs that require preemptive pruning or relocation, we explore issues and answers. We look at woodland gardens and grand estates, we explore gardens great and small. We tackle such sticky wickets as rehabilitating overgrown boxwood hedges and coping with plants that are now considered invasives. And we also talk about specific plants and the people who have worked to preserve heirloom varieties so they will become the superstars of future gardens.

"A Unique Approach to Container Gardening"

The Captured Garden in Milton MA is known throughout New England for their ‘Uncommonly Beautiful Container Gardens and Designs’ combinations that are anything but cookie cutter. Deborah Trickett, principal of The Captured Garden, will give a power point demonstration sharing her unique approach to container gardening. Deborah is a Master Gardener and a frequent lecturer on container gardening at The Arnold Arboretum in Boston. Deborah has also demonstrated creative approaches to container gardening at The New England Flower Show.

More information on the Spring Luncheon will be available in May. This will wrap up a wonderful year for the Garden Club. The food is always delicious!! Watch for more information in the newsletter in May. There will be the need to purchase a ticket in advance.
